Our other appetizer of scallops was equally delicious. One of our appetizers was fried green tomatoes, but instead of just served spread out on a plate, they were mounted on a skewer and topped with some of Niki’s zesty pickled red onions. Then there is Chef Niki Farington, who combines her pickle-making business with the food she creates at Willows. The results are things like Salmon and Grits served with English peas, asparagus, prosciutto, and pesto cream sauce. Executive chef Travis Myers mixes French cuisine with deep south family recipes. Willow’s Bistro is upscale dining with some unique touches. It helped me understand why they were in business so long. My friend bought a loaf and I sampled it. One of the specialties is their fresh baked bread. The bakery’s oven is still heated with wood. The Winkler family descendants continued to own the bakery until 1926. He, his wife, Elizabeth, and their six children, ran the bakery and lived in the house, which is part of the original building, for the rest of their lives. Today, Shana Whitehead and Bill Heath, Café owners specialize in Gourmet sandwiches, salads, desserts, craft sodas, craft beer, and wine.Ĭhristian Winkler bought the bakery in Old Salem that was originally owned by the church in 1807. It was once the church owned store run by Traugott Bagge in the late 1700s. Inside, portions of the stone and brick wall remind you of the building’s history. I highly recommend the bananas foster waffle. My wife's eggs and grits were also delicious, and she is usually critical of restaurant grits. My wife ordered the Young Cardinal breakfast, which included a huge, fluffy biscuit that surely was baked by a Southern grandma hidden somewhere in the back. Despite a full house, she gave us frequent attention and our food arrived amazingly quickly. Her recommendations were spot-on, and we are grateful we listened to her. Our waitress was friendly and patient throughout our questions regarding an unfamiliar menu. The place was jumping, but it was apparent steps had been taken to keep noise at a minimal level. the cool morning, we expected a lengthy wait, but we were seated in only a few minutes with a nice outside view. We happened upon Young Cardinal Cafe, and it was evident by the number of people that it's a popular breakfast spot. We were in town for a quick weekend visit and decided to take a Sunday morning stroll.
